Washingtonia Robusta
Washingtonia Robusta is a palm tree species that you can find in regions like Baja California Sur and Western Sonora. It’s also naturalized in Hawaii, Canary Islands, Italy, Spain, and Florida, among other locations.
What makes this palm tree great is the fact that it can grow up to 25m in height. Sometimes it can even reach up to 30 meters, which is quite impressive. Its leaves have a petiole that has up to 1 meter and the palmate fan of leaflets has a similar length too.
The influorescence can be up to 3 meters and there are some small orange pink flowers too. Some of these flowers are a bit pale though, which does make the Washingtonia Robusta a bit odd at times. There’s also a fruit here, and it’s spherical and blue black. However, it’s edible but it’s also thin fleshed, unlike other palm tree fruits out there.
Despite the fact that its fruit is edible, a lot of people know the fact that this is mostly an ornamental tree. It’s similar to the Mexican version of the Washingtonia, but this one has a narrow trunk. However, it’s robust and rather tall, unlike many other plants in this particular category. That’s what makes the Washingtonia Robusta stand out, the unique look and the outstanding, one of a kind appeal that it has.
It’s a hybrid between two different Washingtonia palms. It does have a great tolerance to the wet cold, something that a lot of palms don’t really seem to have nowadays. Moreover, a single plant can live up to 500 years, which is quite the achievement for a palm tree.
But yes, Washingtonia Robusta is a rather incredible palm species and one that manages to stand out thanks to its uniqueness. It’s certainly the type of decorative, ornamental palm that you may need!
